For the ones living in big cities is common to look for a place to disconnect, that place is usually somewhere quiet, and peaceful. It could be a beach, a forest, or the mountains. While living in Mexico City is common for people to choose one of the several natural reserves on the outskirts of the city. Today a new, and eco-friendly option of transportation comes alive. Parkbus, is the bus service from Mexico City to the National Parks; El Chico y El Nevado de Toluca.

This project was first seen in Canada in 2009. Recently operating in Mexico, and it intends to expand their destinations of the service, the one coming up would be the National Park of Izta-Popo Zoquiapan, located in Puebla.

‘Parkbus is not a tours service, we only focus on the transportation of the people, however we do offer information about the parks to the passengers during the ride’, says Mauricio Diaz, the pioneer of this project here in Mexico. Parkbus works in conjunction with the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (Conanp).

The buses depart from Colonia Roma, and depending on the destination it makes a few stops before exciting the city. Once in the Parks, the passengers have six-hours to enjoy any of the outdoors activities. After time is up, everyone comes back to the city. This service makes possible for people without a car to enjoy their weekend outside of their daily routine, and outside the city, without forgetting the suitability part of the program. “The impact in the environment is significantly different when transporting 40 people in a single bus, rather than using 40 cars for those same people’, says Diaz, the man who brought this concept to Mexico. After meeting the co-founder of it in a bus stop in South China.

Travelers can find tickets online at www.parkbus.com/mx. The adult rate is 350 pesos per person, 315 for students, and 215 pesos for kids and the elderly.

Ride for free

Parkbus is developing a volunteer network, those with knowledge about the parks are able to use the transport service for free. The idea is that the volunteers get to share their past experiences with the others in the bus, this way the company creates a new platform for those that are interested in traveling and sharing with others.
